If there’s a more depressing sentence fragment than “not available to players,” I haven’t found it. Most of the time, I intentionally sidestep gear that’s no longer available in game, but this time round raid_warlords Crown of Desolation was too good a fit with the rest of the set to pass up. Besides, y’all were around for the 10th Anniversary Event, right?

… right?

Oh, who am I kidding. The guilt consumes me.

And, Hearthstone players, in celebration of the recent The Grand Tournament expansion release, mosey on over to the Trial of the Grand Crusader and show Anub’arak what for. If you’re lucky, you’ll get Wrath of the Lich King Raid Drop - Boss Loot or Raid Trash Drop Ardent Guard and a lifelong fear of insects to show for it.

Ever checked your character’s profile on Battle.net only to discover that somehow, while running dungeons half-asleep, you equipped not one but two grey pieces of gear?
Plate Transmog - Blood Elf Paladin - Winged TriumphSo, really, the title of this post should read “What Cathedral Should Be Wearing, Because No Self-Respecting Paladin Should Be Rocking A Clout Mace And A Cloth Twill Belt In End Game Content.” But that’s a bit long.

This set works without the tabard, obviously, but so far as the Paladin fascination with light is concerned, the opportunity to glow with ethereal light every 30 minutes is hard to pass up.

In terms of personal preference, I keep my cloaks hidden. In this case, though, the winged animation effect that Gong-Lu, Strength of Xuen procs occasionally is visible regardless. Of course, it’s a legendary, so if you’ve actually bothered to play this expansion, you’ll probably spend most of your days wearing something better.

Now, because I was on the ball back when I first put this plate transmog set together, I went and selected Exceptional Crystal-Plated Greatbelt as the belt, despite the fact that it’s probably the hardest iteration of that belt model to get. If you like the look, save yourself some grief and trawl through the alternates on Wowhead.

Okay, so this started life as a golden paladin transmog but, uh, somehow it’s less Jamie Lannister and more “I have a chandelier on my head and I am without shame.”

I’ll admit, though, I’m frustrated about the lack of consistency in the shades of gold. The boots, for example, work on a dwarf because of her shorter stature, but when the taller races are in play I’m not sure the proportions still work. I’m also not 100% about  Vendor - Gold  Protector of Frigid Souls. Ugh.

Anyone have any better ideas? Let me know in the comments.

Vanilla Raid Drop - Boss Loot or Raid Trash Drop Lawbringer Chestguard and  Burning Crusade Raid Drop - Boss Loot or Raid Trash Drop Pauldrons of the Argent Sentinel are one of those combinations that should work but that I’ve always struggled to make happen. See, the problem is Vanilla Raid Drop - Boss Loot or Raid Trash Drop Lawbringer Chestguard. Back in the bad old days of Vanilla, Blizzard paired that delicate, almost ethereal white-gold chestplate with a pair of lumpy, unflattering legplates and the most hilarious banana pauldrons you’ve ever seen. No surprise there — questionable tier designs are one of the reasons this website exists — but unlike some of the more classic colour combinations that seem to resurface expansion after expansion Blizzard hasn’t gone back to white-gold plate in any meaningful way.

Oh, there’s been white, occasionally. And gold. But they’re noticeably different shades and, frankly, and it’s made giving Vanilla Raid Drop - Boss Loot or Raid Trash Drop Lawbringer Chestguard a second life more difficult than it needs to be.

This is just an aside, but I find the lack of white-gold gear in Paladin tier sets a missed opportunity, because the Lawbringer was possibly the most Paladin set ever designed. Between their white-gold spell icons, their white and gold spell effects, and the fact that the word “Light” has been awkwardly shoe-horned into almost everything they do, if you ask what a Paladin’s favourite colour is, they’d say, “… uh, what colour is light?” because that’s all they know.

Plate Transmog - Protective Barricade - Side ViewIt’s like expecting a feral druid to understand life beyond a sea of virtually identical bear claw icons.

Paladins are, at their essence, white and gold light dispensers who run on righteous fury and divine protection and they should be allowed to dress as such.

Lacking appropriate legplates, I went with a sort of burgundy alternative instead. The set was also designed to highlight the  Vendor - Gold Protective Barricade of the Light (haha), which I realize the initial screenshot didn’t highlight well. So here you go.
